Reaching the End

As he wraps up The Programmer's Black Book, the author reflects on what he learned writing it and its purpose: helping developers grow and strive for excellence.

The Programmer's Black Book

Here we are, at the end of the book!

After more than a year of shaping The Programmer’s Black Book, it’s time to wrap it up and officially publish it.

As I’ve mentioned throughout the chapters, the version published on the website consists of previews: the final edition will have more developed chapters, with more examples, and will also include several previously unpublished chapters, including the conclusions and one I especially like: the highly productive software developer test.

It’s surprising how many things you question and reconsider when writing about subjects you enjoy and care about. Believing you know something is one thing; putting it into words to explain it to others is quite another—especially in a way your grandmother could understand.

I don’t know whether I’ve been very successful or not, but the main motivation behind The Programmer’s Black Book is to make the path easier for those entering our profession and for those who have been in it longer but think they’ve learned everything there is to know…

If it’s true that we learn from our mistakes, the book contains the ones I believe software developers make most often—the mistakes that keep us from working with excellence as our only goal. What I am absolutely sure of is that the economy of the future won’t be driven by credentialism, but by talentism, or, as the great Raimon Samsó would say, the emerging class of experts.

In the coming days, one final chapter will be published, and in a few weeks you’ll be able to enjoy the professionally edited book through various online platforms.

Thank you, and see you soon.
